Sports initiatives for disabled people
The Sport Development Team work closely with a number of local partners on initiatives to offer activities to people with disabilities. These include;
- Empowerment programme
- Black Country Special School Sports League
- Cycling Champions Scheme
Empowerment programme
The aim of the empowerment project is to empower disabled pupils within education to experience the world of work within a fitness environment and to assist them in making their educational and career choices.
The project was initially funded through Awards for All funding and piloted through the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS).
A pilot empowerment scheme ran with pupils from Penn Hall School working alongside instructors at the fitness suite at Aldersley Leisure Village. They were given tasks to complete under the guidance of the instructors and made a successful presentation at the end of the project.
Following the success of this, the aim is to roll out this programme to other schools in the city.
Black Country Special School Sports League
This league is being established for special school's to take part in a 'inter-school' sport competition against other special schools from across the Black Country.
The Black Country Competition Managers Team, in partnership wth School Sport Partnerships are planning to create a 'sports league' for special schools with the aim of offering more competitive opportunities for young people with disabilities.
The league will be available to all special schools and will provide fixtures for each school, utilising various sports and venues.

Cycling Champions Project
This project is due to begin shortly, with the appointment of a Cycling Champions Development Officer by the City Council. This project will offer cycling to children with learning and physical disabilities across Wolverhampton. Maintenance training and support will be offered to BME communities through the Wildside Activity Centre's cycle workshop. Rides and group activities will be supported through partnership with other organisations.
The model will identify lead 'champions' who will receive additional training in project sustainability and will carry the programme forward after a years input from the Cycling Officer.
The development officer will link with local and nationally available resources provided by Cyclists Touring Club (CTC) and the Active Travel Consortium.
