Grass cutting

We are responsible for maintaining grassed areas to ensure the city has a pleasingly aesthetic and tidy appearance and is safe to pedestrian and road users.

Areas we cut

Wolverhampton City Council maintains the grassed areas on council owned land, this includes the following areas of our service:

  • Highways – grass verges
  • Leisure – Parks and Open Spaces, environmental meadow areas
  • Housing - Wolverhampton Homes communal areas
  • Social Services – grounds
  • Education – non school sites
  • Bereavement Services - Cemeteries and Crematorium

Grass maintenance work is organised on a quality basis and there are different grass standards applied to the individual grassed areas depending on where they are and their purpose.  Several different operations are performed in order to achieve the overall standards, these include, grass cutting, trimming of the grass edge and weed control including chemical application.

By operating on a quality basis rather than enforcing a grass cutting frequency, we ask contractors to work within pre-specified parameters in particular the permitted height that the grass shall be allowed to grow to.  This allows the contractor responsible for the grass maintenance to adapt their maintenance regimes to adjust to things such as changes in weather conditions i.e., in drought conditions, the grass does not grow as quickly, therefore will not require cutting so often.  This ensures more valuable use of resources.
