The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards
To me this was a memorable book because it dealt with emotions in the modern world.
It is the story of twins born to a doctor and his wife. Because of bad weather, the husband delivered the babies, a boy and a girl. The boy was normal but the father recognised that the girl had physical and mental problems. He told the nurse who advised him to take the child to a home.
From then on the story develops along two lives about the lives of the children.
The nurse decides to keep the girl but the problems she has are very real for a single mom coping with a problem child. The real mother also suffers emotional stress because she was told that the baby had died and of course the father is wracked with guilt at abandoning the child and deceiving his wife.
It is a well thought out, believable story, well told and the characters are portrayed realistically.
The emotions they all suffered are as you would expect but not 'slushy' and is raises the perennial question, 'What would you do in this situation?'
I enjoyed this book very much.
