Antony and Cleopatra by Colleen McCullough

Colleen McCullough finishes off her acclaimed 'Masters of Rome' series with the epic civil war between the Roman generals Antony, Queen Cleopatra's lover, and Octavian.

This novel finishes the history of the downfall of the Roman Republic which began with 'The First Man in Rome' and over a total of seven books brings to life nearly a century of decisive history.

McCullough has thoroughly researched the period and her historical accuracy cannot be faulted, but this doesn't prevent her from drawing the reader into a world which seems vividly alive with fascinating larger-than-life characters.

We understand their motivations, greeds and lusts and struggle to place our sympathy solely on one side of the conflict. This is perhaps the novel's greatest achievement; some of history's most intriguing figures are portrayed with all their virtues and flaws displayed.
