Postal research service

Wolverhampton Archives and Local Studies welcomes visitors interested in the books and archives in its care.

There is no entrance fee, and you do not have to pay to look at the documents.

We appreciate, however, that not everyone is able to visit the office in person, and so we offer a limited postal service that may help with your research.

The staff of Wolverhampton Archives and Local Studies are able to undertake limited research in response to specific enquiries.

How much does the service cost?

The charge for this service is £8.00 per 30 minutes' work, up to a maximum of two hours.

The fee must be paid in advance, and is non-returnable.

You may pay by cheque, made payable to Wolverhampton City Council, or by credit card.

What does the charge cover?

The fee covers a maximum of two hours research by a member of staff in the manuscript, printed or microform sources held by Wolverhampton Archives and Local Studies.

Once the research has been completed, you will receive a letter from us indicating which sources we have checked and what relevant information has been found.

Photocopies of relevant extracts will be supplied where appropriate, normally at no extra cost.

The charge is made to cover the time taken to undertake the research, not the results of the search.

For this reason, the fee cannot be refunded if the search is unsuccessful. The fee is inclusive of VAT and postage.

What if my enquiry takes longer than two hours?

Unfortunately it is not possible for staff to undertake non-specific enquiries of a general or lengthy nature.

If you are unsure whether your enquiry can be taken on, please telephone or email us.

If we are unable to help, we will send you a list of local record searchers who may be able to undertake work of this kind.

What types of research are undertaken?

We need to know specifically what information you would like us to try and find out for you.

Please give us as many details as you can about the questions you would like us to answer.

Accurate dates, locations and names are helpful and will improve our chances of success.

Please note that access to records of a confidential nature is restricted, and that these cannot therefore be consulted in answer to your enquiry without a letter of authority.

Documents which are in the process of being repaired or listed might also be unavailable for consultation.

If you simply need to know what sorts of information we have in order to plan your own research, we are happy to supply details free of charge.
