Entertainment competitions

Jenny Taylor from Pendeford, who is the driving force behind an inspirational youth empowerment group, was named named Wolverhampton’s Community Safety Champion 2008.

Hailed for her work with young people as director of the Engage Youth Empowerment Service (EYES) at Tuesday night’s Wolverhampton Community Safety Awards Jenny received a well deserved certificate and in addition was presented with a prize package which includes tickets for shows at the Civic Hall, Grand Theatre and Arena Theatre, a family pass to the Light House cinema and lunch at Wolverhampton Art Gallery's café.

The service was developed to target young people in Pendeford who were at risk of becoming involved in crime.  The success of the scheme, which involves young people in the performing arts, has seen its work spread throughout Wolverhampton.

Many of the young people Jenny has helped are now peer mentors or volunteers with other youths and act as positive role models for the next generation.

Now in its second year, Wolverhampton Community Safety Awards gives the Safer Wolverhampton Partnership the chance to formally recognise those residents in our neighbourhoods who go the extra mile to help make Wolverhampton a safe city.

Wolverhampton Entertains as a group of venues, are committed to making Wolverhampton a safer city for all of our visitors and fully support the Safer Wolverhampton Partnership’s initiatives.

Other winners included Carol Billingham from Low Hill, Megan Fitzgerald-Plummer from Bilston, Natasha Holness from Woodcross, Geoff Hopkins from Tettenhall, Joe Jackson of New Park Village, Val Mullis from Whitmore Reans, Millicent Seed of Parkfields, Reg Sidebottom of Whitmore Reans, Karen Trainer from the Scotlands, members of the Ashmore Park Police Liaison Group and the Heath Park Youth Against Crime Group and volunteers at Low Hill Police Station.

Roy and Jean Girdler from St Chads and Shirley Oates from Whitmore Reans scooped two special awards sponsored by Wolverhampton Homes and Touchstone in recognition of their work to make their neighbourhoods feel safe.
