Youth offending

Find out below about the work of the Youth Offending Team.

Youth Offending Team

Wolverhampton Youth Offending Team (YOT) brings together trained professionals from different agencies who work together in one office to tackle youth offending behaviour among all young offenders aged 10 to 17.

The Wolverhampton Youth Offending Team is made up of social workers, probation officers, police officers, youth workers, Connexions adviser, education social workers, health and drug misuse personnel and a fire officer. The team is based at Social Services' offices in Birches Barn Road, Penn.

National Standards

The team adheres to National Standards or guidelines issued by the Youth Justice Board. The board sets out a framework for the supervision of offenders in the community and supervision for those serving custodial sentences and after release.

The guidelines urge Youth Offending Teams to provide an effective service and develop public confidence by the rehabilitation of offenders.

All YOTs are required to produce an annual youth justice plan that describes the nature and scale of offending by young people in their area and the programmes available to tackle it.

Objectives of the Youth Offending Team:

  • The swift administration of justice so that every young person accused of breaking the law has the matter dealt with quickly
  • To help young offenders face the consequences of their offending, for themselves, their families, their victims and the community and help them to develop a sense of personal responsibility
  • To work with young people to tackle the particular factors, for example personal, family, educational, or health, that put them at risk of offending
  • To ensure that punishment is in proportion to the seriousness and persistence of offending
  • To encourage reparation to victims or their communities by young offenders. This can include carrying out useful work to pay back the community
  • To reinforce the responsibilities of parents and help them to help their children
  • Working with partner agencies, to provide support networks to prevent offending behaviour.
