Legal aid

If you are having legal problems or are accused of a crime and you can't afford to pay for a legal adviser you may be able to get legal aid.

The legal aid system in England and Wales is run by the Legal Services Commission who are also responsible for ensuring that people get information, advice and legal help with a range of everyday problems.

Who to contact for help

Contact Community Legal Services to find out if you are eligible for legal aid. Their website has an online legal aid calculator to help you work out if you are eligible.

To apply for help from the Community Legal Services (CLS) you need to visit a Community Legal Service quality-assured solicitor or adviser. You will find a list of CLS solicitors and advisers in your area in the directory on the Community Legal Services website. Or you can contact the CLS Direct telephone advice service on 0845 3454 345, textphone 0845 609 6677.
