Sheltered housing

Sheltered housing and homes provided by both the City Council and Housing Associations are normally let to older people of pensionable age or younger disabled people.

Tenants have the same rights as other council tenants except for the ‘Right to Buy’.

What is Sheltered Housing?

Sheltered Housing is a group of self-contained flats, bedsits or bungalows designed to meet the specific needs of older people.

A member of staff supports the scheme during weekdays and there is a community alarm provided in the event of any emergencies at other times.

Many schemes offer communal facilities and social activities.

How to apply

Lists of schemes are available at your nearest Housing Office or Civic Centre. Staff will be able to tell you how to register.

Standards

When applying for Sheltered Housing:

  • You can view the scheme and meet the sheltered scheme officer prior to accepting a tenancy
  • You will get a Carelink alarm, and a demonstration of the use of it, for emergency cover and reassurance at all times.
  • The sheltered scheme officer will keep records in confidence
  • You will receive the right help in an emergency
  • You have the right to privacy, independence and support from the sheltered scheme officer
  • You will receive guidance on the payment of rent, reporting of repairs and other tenancy matters.
