University of Wolverhampton Student Housing Accreditation Scheme

If you are a student attending or intending to attend the University of Wolverhampton and need private rented accommodation, you need to know about the Student Housing Accreditation Scheme.

Wolverhampton City Council, together with Walsall and Wrekin Councils, the University of Wolverhampton Students Union and West Midlands Fire Service, has set minimum standards for smaller houses (up to 2 storeys and 5 students sharing) in the area. The scheme aims to ensure that all houses on offer to students are safe and suitable to be lived in and covers such matters as:

  • Repairs;
  • Gas and electrical safety;
  • Fire precautions;
  • General management.

The scheme was launched to landlords in November 1997 and has the full backing of the 3 Councils, the University, the Students Union and the Fire Service.

From summer 1999, any property which is advertised by the University Residential Services or the Students Union has had to comply with the scheme.

When you go to view a property, please make sure that you follow the advice given out by the Students Union and Residential Services in their handbooks and ask the owner if the house complies with the accreditation standards.

For further information about the scheme or regarding any housing problems, please contact either:

Wolverhampton Environmental Health Team on (01902) 552812, 5528133, 554816  551284 or 551414

REMEMBER, THE SCHEME HAS BEEN INTRODUCED TO SAFEGUARD YOUR INTERESTS AND ONLY BY STUDENTS DEMANDING ACCREDITED ACCOMMODATION WILL THE SCHEME BE TOTALLY SUCCESSFUL.
