Carer emergency card scheme
The scheme is open to all carers in Wolverhampton and it is free. It has been set up to ease carers' fears about what would happen to the person or persons they look after if they were suddenly taken ill or involved in an accident or emergency and they were unable to say that someone depended on them.
Carers carry a card with a unique number on it. It directs emergency services to contact the council's Emergency Control Centre.
How the scheme works
The card is like a credit card in size. It carries a serial number, a telephone number to ring and instructions about what to do. The card is only for use in an emergency where the carer is unable to communicate, if, for example, they have been involved in an accident. On finding the card the ambulance, hospital or police staff ring the number given for our 24-hour control centre, and quote the serial number.
The control centre will then take the appropriate action to contact relatives or Adult Social Care. All calls received are recorded.
Carers should tell the Carer Support Team of any changes, or if their caring role ceases.
