Valuing people

Valuing People is all about everyone working together so that the lives of all people with learning disabilities are better.

It comes from a special plan or White Paper published by the Government in 2001. This plan was written with the support of people with learning disabilities and was a new approach to improving services. It was also designed to help people with a learning disability play a more major role in society.

Valuing People says that behind all the words four main things matter:

  • Rights
  • Independence
  • Choice
  • Inclusion

One of the main aims of Valuing People is to make the voices of people with learning disabilities heard when plans are made and decisions taken by local councils.

The National Forum of People with Learning Disabilities has been set up to give people with learning disabilities a national voice.
