Partner towns - Subotica, Serbia
Subotica's is a small town in Northern Serbia, very close to the Hungarian border.
The town itself is a commercial and residential haven, but set in a semi-rural region with agricultural traditions.
Special features of the town include the excellently preserved historical buildings and civic squares; substantial Jewish community and renowned Higher education establishments.
Current projects
Partnership with the Local Democracy Agency in Subotica to help foster democratic practices amongst the new institutional actors.
Friendship agreement with Subotica local authority to exchange best practice on environmental issues and issues of community cohesion Partners in funding application to the Serbian EXCHANGE programme to support an urban regeneration study tour exchange.
Potential future partner in the EU funded Leonardo project to train English language teaching assistants and secure work placements in Serbian schools.
Background to Co-operation
Wolverhampton is a member of the Association of Local Democracy Agencies (ALDA)which is an international organisation which seeks to promote democracy and accountability through sharing practice between cities from the West and those from the East.
Wolverhampton is specifically linked to Subotica Local Democracy Agency, acting as a lead partner to support the democratic training programme it conducts in the region.
This relationship began in 2002 and has grown from strength to strength, with a closer relationship now established with the municipal Council in Subotica and its members and officers, as well as with several local non-government organisations and the local University and Open University office.
