Adult social care - Strike action, July 16 and 17

The city council will do its utmost to provide help and support to those vulnerable adults who rely on adult social care services.

However, it is also relying heavily on the goodwill of relatives and unpaid carers to look after their loved ones during the two days of action.

Residential homes

The three council-run residential homes – Merry Hill House in Merry Hill, Nelson Mandela House in Pendeford and Underhill House in Bushbury – will remain open. Cover will be provided by the redeployment of staff from other locations if necessary.

Meals on wheels

Meals on wheels will continue to be provided for the most needy. Letters have already gone out to all people receiving this service.

Home care

Prioritisation will also take place to make sure that staff cover the most vulnerable users of the council’s home care service.

Older people

Duty cover for the older people’s teams providing social work assessment and care management will be provided from one office location in the North East of the city.

Emergency cover will be provided by the Access and Initial Assessment Team and the social work team at New Cross Hospital will also be covered.

Services will continue as normal across the council’s sheltered housing schemes for older people and for most of those service users receiving tenancy sustainment.

Learning disabilities

Cover will also be provided to give help and support for people with a learning disability and those with a physical and sensory disability. The Neville Garratt Centre will be closed to the public.

The Joint Learning Disability team office in Pond Lane will be open.

The Maltings Day Centre for people with a physical or sensory disability will be closed although a full service will be provided for community equipment such as aids and adaptations.

Three day centres for people with a learning disability – Albert Road, Oxley and Stowheath  will also be closed. The city council has written to carers to tell them of the situation.

Old Tree Nursery in Pendeford will remain open. Minimum cover has been agreed with staff at homes for adults with a learning disability.

Carer support

The Carer Centre in Queen Street will be open and a skeleton service will be provided to carers.

Resource centres

No day care will be provided at the council’s four resource centres – Warstones, Bradley in Bilston, Woden in Wednesfield and Blakenhall. Ekta Day Centre for Asian Elders will stay open.

Carelink emergency alarms

The council’s 24-hour Carelink emergency alarm response service will continue to be delivered but we will only be able to provide minimum cover, therefore calls may take longer to be answered. The service will be relying on staff volunteers to answer calls.

The Carelink response service to calls requiring a visit will be relying on relatives, neighbours and emergency services to respond as the need arises.

Homelessness

An emergency homelessness service will be provided to help people in crisis such as following a fire, an incident of domestic abuse, or those who are roofless for some other reason through no fault of their own. Staff will be on stand-by to deal with such roofless people.

Mental health

Corner House Resource Centre in Dunstall Road will be open, but no adult social care services will be provided.

Croft Resource Centre in Bilston will be open and providing an outreach service.
