Appeal for information on graffiti

Released: 28 March 2008

Wolverhampton City Council is appealing for information which could help in ongoing efforts to stop vandals blighting the city with graffiti.

Members of the public are being asked if they can provide any details which might help to trace who is behind graffiti which has appeared on walls, properties and other surfaces in two areas of the city in recent weeks.

Officers would like to hear from anyone who can help in identifying signatures and symbols which have been graffitied along the Cannock Road.

They would also like to speak to anyone who knows anything about graffiti spelling out the initials ‘JB’ or ‘Josh’ in areas across Wednesfield.

Nick Edwards, Wolverhampton City Council’s Chief Officer for Environmental Services, said: “Environmental issues such as graffiti have a huge impact. Graffiti is a blight on the city and costs around £50,000 each year to clean up.

“This is why it is important we enrol the support of the public in providing information which will help us tackle environmental crime through effective regulation and enforcement services.

“A cleaner environment is one of the top priorities for people in this city and by working together we can achieve this.

“I would urge anyone who knows anything about these recent graffiti issues and, indeed, any instances of graffiti in public places around the city to get in contact.”

The graffiti will be cleaned off the walls and properties shortly as part of the council’s ongoing graffiti removal programme.

This is just one area which is focused on through the council’s wider, long term anti-graffiti campaign which involves a programme of cleaning, anti-graffiti treatment and enforcement.

Anyone with any information about these or other instances of graffiti is asked to contact public protection officers in the council’s Environmental Services section on 01902 555184.

People can also go to www.wolverhampton.gov.uk/graffiti to report graffiti.

Issued by the press office.
