Road works sign

Temporary closure of Dudley Street, Bilston

Released: 12 March 2008

Dudley Street in Bilston is being closed north of Carder Crescent from next Monday (March 17) for approximately eight weeks to allow a section of the road to be lowered.

This is to enable it to be “tied in” to the new link road built from Dudley Street across to Bankfield Road.

The work is being undertaken as part of the first phase of the Bilston Urban Village regeneration scheme to release land for the development of the new Bilston Leisure Centre.

The current contract is being funded by the Regional Development Agency, Advantage West Midlands, who own the former GKN site, and who are partners with the city council in bringing forward the Urban Village scheme.

Wrekin Construction, contractors for the works, will be putting in place signed diversions for the duration of the closure.

Work has been taking place over the past few weeks lowering the gas, water, electricity and telephone services prior to the work to the carriageway itself.

Pedestrian access along Dudley Street will be maintained for the duration of these works.

When Dudley Street reopens, road users from Bradley will use the new link road to Bankfield Road and then up to the Black Country Route.

The northern section of Dudley Street will remain permanently closed to allow for the development of the new Bilston Leisure Centre.

The work also includes modifications to Bankfield Road and the Black Country Route and includes a new right turn lane into Bankfield Road from the Black Country Route and a ‘bus only’ right turn lane from Bankfield Road onto the Black Country Route, giving direct access to the bus station.

The contractors have been making every effort to minimise the inconvenience to motorists whilst these works have been carried out. The temporary closure of Dudley Street is an inevitable part of this process and every effort will be made to avoid disruption wherever possible.

Issued by the press office.
