New youth MPs and youth councillors elected

Released: 5 March 2008

Wolverhampton’s newly elected Members of Youth Parliament and Youth Councillors are busy preparing to take on their roles representing the city’s young people.

The results of the city’s Youth Elections were declared at a special ceremony in the Council Chamber at Wolverhampton Civic Centre, last week (Thursday February 28), attended by the Mayor, Councillor Trudy Bowen.

Voting by text message, on-line and at traditional ballot boxes in schools and youth facilities took place in February to elect the Youth Councillors, Youth MPs and their deputies. The Youth Councillor seats were contested by 26 candidates and five candidates stood for the Youth MP and deputy seats.

A total of 8,460 votes were cast by young people aged between 11 and 21 years old; a massive increase on last year when just over 5,700 votes were cast.

The successful candidates, aged between 11 and 21, will help to ensure that young people’s views are heard and influence policies on a range of issues which affect them. They are currently working with youth workers to prepare for their new duties with the Youth Council and United Kingdom Youth Parliament.

Councillor Paula Brookfield, Wolverhampton City Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “The Youth Elections project, a partnership between Wolverhampton City Council’s Youth Service and the Youth Council, has now been operating for more than fifteen years.

“They are a key area in engaging with young people and allowing them to influence the future direction of the city.

“This year’s elections have been the most successful yet, topping last year’s figure for the number of votes cast by more than 2,750.

“I’m absolutely delighted that so many young people have made the effort to tell us who they want as their Youth Councillors and MPs.”
