Wolverhampton Environmental Awards

Wolverhampton Environmental Awards 2008

Released: 31 July 2008

Wolverhampton City Council is currently inviting entries for the city’s Environmental Awards Scheme 2008.

These prestigious environmental awards, now being run for the ninth time, give recognition and reward to outstanding projects which have made a positive contribution to the city’s environment and improved the quality of life of its residents and those who work in and visit Wolverhampton.

Entries may be submitted by architects, builders, developers, or owners and may be small or large-scale projects.  Any quality project may be nominated.

Entries in previous years have included new development, restoration of historic buildings, landscape projects or any other project which enhances the environment.

In order to be eligible for entry, schemes should have been completed between 1 April 2006 and 31 March 2008.

Previous Award winners have included:

  • Molineux Stadium;
  • The Chubb Building
  • St Leonard’s Rectory, Bilston
  • The Harrison Learning Centre, University of Wolverhampton
  • Pendeford Oasis Project at St Paul’s School and Community Church.

In 2006, a new category of Award called the ‘People’s Choice’, was launched. This new Award gives city residents the opportunity to nominate individuals, groups, organisations or projects whose achievements they feel have resulted in an outstanding contribution to environmental quality in the city and enhanced the lives of those who live, work and visit the city

Examples of work which the Award would seek to acknowledge could include:

  • taking pride in regularly maintaining a building to a high standard
  • creating a valuable community resource, or striving to ensure the continued use of an existing one, for example, a privately owned allotment
  • working tirelessly to promote and protect the historic or natural environment of the city
  • publicity material dedicated to promoting the environment, such as a website or information leaflet.

The overall ‘People’s Choice’ winner in 2006 was 43, Broad Lane, Bradmore, for a garden open under the National Garden Scheme.

A commendation was given to CLC Bookshop, 69 Worcester Street for restoration of shop front.  The city council will consider all ideas put forward.

The Mayor of Wolverhampton, Councillor Mrs Christine Mills, said, “I have been closely involved with the Wolverhampton Environmental Awards for a number of years, through the Planning Committee and as a member of the judging panel.

“I am very pleased to be associated with the project and delighted to be hosting the Awards Presentation Ceremony in December to celebrate schemes which have made a significant contribution to the city’s environmental quality”.

Leaflets and entry forms for the Environmental awards and People’s Choice Nomination forms are available from the Civic Centre, the Visitor Information Centre, all public libraries, the city centre and Bilston Art Galleries and City Archives.
