Homes to get plastic and cardboard recycling
Released: 11 July 2008
Waste plastic and cardboard will be collected from people’s homes in Wolverhampton from October 2008, the city council announced today (11 July).
The council’s Waste Partnership will expand its successful kerbside recycling scheme to include the new items from the autumn.
The announcement is a major step forward in the city’s recycling efforts. Currently, the council recycles about 26 per cent of the waste from its 104,000 households, but has a target to achieve 30.23 per cent by 2008/09. The aim is to exceed that target and reach a 40.91 per cent recycling rate by 2013.
Today’s announcement means that the council will now add items such as plastic bottles and cardboard boxes to the recyclables it already collects from the kerbside which are: newspapers, magazines, glass bottles and jars, food and drink cans, plastic bottles, cardboard and garden waste.
Councillor Barry Findlay, cabinet member for the environment, said: "The council has had a lot of enquiries from members of the public wishing to recycle plastics and cardboard and is pleased to be able to offer this service.
"Our aim in rolling out this new scheme is to get as many people recycling as possible. We are responding both to the wishes of local people who have said that improved facilities would encourage them to recycle and also to tough new Government targets that we have to meet.
“The introduction of this next phase of our kerbside recycling schemes shows a commitment to provide the best possible collection and recycling systems to suit the needs of people living in Wolverhampton.”
The new collections will take place on the same day and frequency as the existing kerbside collections. The cardboards and plastics will be taken to a local recycler for reprocessing. Before the new service starts, residents will receive information explaining the improvements to service before they take delivery of new recycling bags.
