Superheroes take over Mayoral suite

Released: Monday, 21 January 2008

Superheroes will take over the mayoral suite at Wolverhampton’s Civic Centre tomorrow (Tuesday, 22 January 2008) for a glittering awards ceremony.

Real life super men and wonder women will meet with the city’s top cops and the Mayor to have their crime busting efforts recognised with a Wolverhampton Community Safety Award.

Now in its second year, the awards give members of the Safer Wolverhampton Partnership the chance to formally recognise those plucky pensioners, crime fighting kids and everyone in between, who go the extra mile to make Wolverhampton a safe city.

One of those receiving an award on Tuesday will be part-time Elvis impersonator Megan Fitzgerald-Plummer.

When Megan’s not entertaining Bilston pensioners with her impressions of the ‘The King’, she gets all shook up about fly tipping in local alleyways, overgrown church grounds and protecting older people from bogus callers.

She has campaigned for alley gates and worked with the city council to clean up areas blighted by fly tippers, went door to door with neighbourhood wardens to offer older people advice on the dangers of bogus callers and much more.

On hearing that she will receive an award, Megan said: “I’m delighted to be receiving a Wolverhampton Community Safety Award.  The award recognises not just my efforts, but the efforts of those I volunteer with to make our city even safer.”

Richard Carr, Chairman of the Safer Wolverhampton Partnership, said: “The Wolverhampton Community Safety Awards provide the partnership with the opportunity to thank local people who have worked hard, without pay, to help us reduce crime and improve people’s quality of life.

“Megan is just one example of our city’s unsung heroes who go the extra mile to make Wolverhampton even safer.”

The overall winner, who will be crowned Wolverhampton’s Community Safety Champion, is yet to be announced.

They will be presented, in addition to their award certificate, with an exclusive entertainment package including tickets for shows at the Civic Hall, Grand Theatre and Arena Theatre, a family pass to the Light House cinema and lunch at Wolverhampton Art Gallery’s café, courtesy of award sponsor Wolverhampton Entertains.

Emma Cleary, Wolverhampton Entertains project officer, said: “Wolverhampton City Council is proud to be sponsoring such a well deserved award. As a group of venues, we too are committed to making Wolverhampton a safer city for all of our visitors and fully support the initiatives that the Safer Wolverhampton Partnership develops.

“The achievements of all of the winners, and those that were nominated, is just fantastic.

“It is great how members of the community, organisations and individual venues are so passionate about enhancing the quality of living throughout the city.

“We hope that the winner’s visits to our venues over the next few months will be enjoyable and make their continual safer city efforts worthwhile.”

Two runners up will receive £100 each as a special thank you from Wolverhampton housing providers, Wolverhampton Homes and Touchstone Housing - part of Midland Heart.

Issued by the Press Office.
