Teaching assistants ready for European challenge

Released: 17 January 2008

Teaching assistants from Wolverhampton are preparing to fly out to Eastern Europe to help school children improve their English language skills.

A total of eleven people will head off for Wolverhampton’s partner towns in Hungary and Poland on February 1 and will spend the next four months teaching English to children aged between eight and 14 years old.

The teaching assistants have trained with Wolverhampton City Council’s Adult Education Service as part of the scheme funded by the European Leonardo da Vinci programme.

Course Leader Bruce Parsons said: “They will spend the next few months in either Köbánya in Hungary or Walbrzych in Poland helping to improve the spoken English of the children living there.

“They are all really looking forward to it. It is a great opportunity for them to visit somewhere new, learn about a new country and its culture and, of course, pass on their skills by educating youngsters.

“The scheme is very successful - three people who went on it previously are now teaching with the Adult Education Service while one enjoyed Hungary so much they decided to stay out there to carry on teaching.”

Another Leonardo-backed course begins in mid-February for those who would like the chance to teach in either Hungary or Poland, with sessions on Tuesday evenings and the occasional Saturday until the end of May. The placement begins in September.

Anyone who is interested in applying can contact bruce.parsons@aes.wolverhampton.gov.uk or call the Adult Education Service on 01902 551532 for more information.

Bruce added: “I would encourage anyone who has ever thought about teaching English as a second language to take advantage of this great opportunity.”
