Learn a new skill for the new year

Released: 14 January 2008

People who made it their New Year’s resolution to learn a new skill or hobby need look no further than Wolverhampton’s Adult Education Service for inspiration.

With more than 150 courses starting over the next month, there is something for everyone courtesy of the Wolverhampton City Council-run service.

Courses cover a range of subject areas, from professional studies and information communication technology (ICT) to languages, healthy living and arts, crafts and media.

The 13 professional studies courses include certificates and NVQs in teaching and a range of courses aimed at introducing, developing and applying mentoring skills.

There are 24 ICT courses, covering everything from general IT skills to document presentation, digital imaging and medical word processing.

Also on offer are 62 language courses – ranging from absolute beginners to advanced – include French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Polish, Punjabi, Greek and Welsh.  There are also English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) courses.

Arts, crafts and media’s 27 offerings include interior design, soft furnishings, sculpture, spinning, weaving and knitting, creative embroidery, pottery workshops and even making jewellery from recycled materials.

And there are 28 courses aimed at helping people to live healthily, covering everything from swimming, aquacise, Indian head massage and belly dancing to food hygiene, floristry, sugar craft and interestingly titled cookery courses like Cuisines of the Sun, Top 10 Chinese Favourites and Other Oriental Recipes.

Sian Fletcher, curriculum manager for arts, crafts and media, said: “We feel we have put together a very broad prospectus and we hope that there is something for everyone on offer.

“So if you made it your New Year’s resolution to pick up a new skill or develop that new pastime that you have always promised yourself, or just want to meet like-minded people, we look forward to seeing you on one of our courses very soon.”
