What's on for Winter 2008
Released: 14 January 2008
People are being encouraged to banish the post Christmas blues by enjoying the packed programme of events at venues across Wolverhampton.
Wolverhampton City Council’s latest What’s on Where guide is out now and is crammed with information about the huge programme of music, theatre, films, exhibitions, activities and events taking place until the end of March.
Theatre-goers are spoiled for choice, with productions ranging from this year’s panto Dick Whittington; Hello Dolly with Anita Dobson and Darren Day; Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None; The 39 Steps; Disney’s phenomenally successful High School Musical and popular radio show I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue, which will all be on stage at the Grand Theatre.
For those who prefer a more intimate theatre experience, the Arena Theatre will be hosting shows such as The Deadline, Much Ado About Nothing, Mapdance and The Mother Ship. The Civic Hall will also be adding theatre to its ever growing line-up with an appearance by the Chinese State Circus.
Big names from the music world coming to the city include James Blunt; Athlete; Amy MacDonald; Kate Nash; Kelly Clarkson; the Sugababes and the UK Beach Boys, while at the other end of the musical spectrum the Civic Hall will be continuing its Classical Concert Season with the CBSO Spectacular and Classical Masterpieces.
Comedy is being provided by Richard Herring and Jimmy Carr, while wacky TV science show Brainiac also hits the stage at the Civic Hall in March.
Movie-goers can enjoy a selection of blockbusters and classics from around the world at the Light House, including cult film Fargo (18), while the Light House’s ever-popular film and TV quizzes will be on offer.
Other highlights are provided by the city’s galleries and museums, where programmes include exhibitions such as Sensing Sculpture, the Northern Ireland Collection, Pop Art and Politics in the 1960s and Craftsense. The next few months will also see a range of arts and crafts workshops for all the family taking place.
Furthermore, with details about events at other council-run venues, local libraries, parks, sports arenas and the city’s two National Trust properties, there are plenty of reasons to get out and about at the start of 2008.
Emma Cleary, What’s on Where Wolverhampton Co-ordinator, said: “As always, there is something for everyone here in Wolverhampton over the next few months - and we look forward to seeing new and regular faces visiting our events and our city very soon.”
The free guide, which provides times, dates, locations and useful telephone numbers, is available from the Civic Centre in St Peter’s Square, the Visitor Information Centre in Queen Square, local libraries and community centres as well as a variety of leisure outlets throughout the Black County, Birmingham and Shropshire.
