Compactor theft from Bilston Market

Released: 7 January 2008

A £15,000 rubbish compactor has been stolen from the rear of Bilston Market.

The 18 foot long by ten foot wide green metal container was loaded by thieves onto a ‘roll on - roll off’ lorry which had its registration plates obscured and taken at 5.10am on Christmas Eve morning.

The theft of the machine, which crushes market waste such as packaging, before removal and disposal, was captured on CCTV and Wolverhampton City Council Market Service is co-operating with Police who are investigating the incident.

The machine, which looks like a closed skip, could either have been taken to be used elsewhere in its current form and for the same compacting purpose - but also has a scrap metal value of around £3,000.

Anyone who was in the vicinity of Pinfold Street at the rear of Bilston market at around 5am on Christmas Eve morning and remembers either seeing a lorry or people around the compactor is asked to contact West Midlands Police at Wednesfield.

Issued by the press office.
