Leisure centre closes for improvements

Released: 2 January 2008

Central Baths will temporarily close next week as improvement work costing £78,000 continues.

Changes include new toilets, improved access, a lower reception counter for wheelchair users, a larger changing room for families and a better poolside viewing area for people with wheelchairs or pushchairs.

The improvements are being undertaken by Wolverhampton City Council to ensure the leisure centre complies with the Disability Discrimination Act.

Though Central Baths has remained open throughout much of the work, which began late last year, it will be necessary to close the facility for 12 days from Monday, 7 January.

Ian Bosworth, Operations Manager, said: “While we regret having to temporarily close, we would ask customers to bear with us and we look forward to welcoming them back to an even better Central Baths when we re-open on Saturday, 19 January.”

Customers will be able to use alternative facilities at Aldersley Leisure Village, Bilston Leisure Centre and Wolverhampton Swimming & Fitness Centre.

The work is the latest big money investment to be made in the popular facility.  In November, a £25,000 revamp of the gym saw a large range of new fitness equipment installed.

Central Baths was built in 1990 and stands on the site of Wolverhampton’s first public baths, which were opened in 1850 in what would become Bath Avenue.  Originally Byzantine in style, they were remodelled and extended over the years until the site was cleared in 1985.

Issued by the press office.
