Last call for five-a-side footballers to join tournament

Released: 13 February 2008

The closing date for entries to a popular youth football tournament in Wolverhampton is rapidly approaching.

The stars of tomorrow will be showing off their skills at the 20th annual Jimmy Mullen Five-a-Side Championships next month.

The tournament, held in memory of the legendary Wolverhampton Wanderers winger, kicks-off with qualifying rounds at the indoor arena at Aldersley Leisure Village on Saturday, March 8.

Winners from those heats will go through to the finals at the Molineux Stadium, the home of Wolves, on Thursday, April 24.

But anyone who wants to take part needs to move fast as the closing date for entries is this coming Monday, February 18.

The event is staged by Wolverhampton City Council and Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Dave Hill, the council’s Sport Development Officer, said: “The tournament is open to teams from across the region, and we are looking forward to enjoying a great couple of days of football.

“This year is the 20th anniversary of the Jimmy Mullen Five-a-Side Championships and it has proved a massive success over the last couple of decades.”

Richard Skirrow, Secretary of Wolverhampton Wanderers, added: “We are delighted to once again support this competition in memory of a Wolves great.”

There are five age groups for boys - under 10s, 11s, 12s, 13s and 14s - and two for girls, under 12s and 14s - and it costs £25 a team to enter.

Entry forms are available from Sports Development Officer Dave Hill on 01902 556221, by emailing dave.hill@wolverhampton.gov.uk or by logging on to www.wolverhampton.gov.uk/sportdevelopment.

Issued by the press office.
