Changes to be made to Red Route
Released: 11 February 2008
Some of the features of Wolverhampton’s pilot red route scheme along the A449 Stafford Road are due to be improved in response to comments received from the public.
The city council has received a number of comments from people concerning the number of signs along parts of the route, as well as some road markings which were considered to be confusing and detrimental to the street scene – particularly when located outside people’s properties.
The council has always made it clear that the Stafford Road red route was a pilot scheme and as such, any public concerns would be taken seriously. In keeping with this commitment, parking bays and associated signs outside residential properties will be removed during February. They will be replaced with a single red line and new smaller but clearer signs.
It is hoped that the revised measures will improve the street scene as well as being clearer for motorists. The effect of the measures will be beneficial to both road users and those whose homes front the road in that they will continue to permit on-street parking between 10am and 4pm each day, but for an unlimited duration unlike the current 2-hour limit.
There will be no other significant changes to the operation of the red route that arise as a consequence of these revisions.
As has always been planned, a comprehensive review of the scheme will be undertaken in the Spring. The results of this will determine whether the pilot scheme should be made permanent.
If residents or motorists require more information about the red route, they can call City Direct on 01902 551155.
