Pupils' artwork goes on display at city gallery

Released: 4 February 2008

Artwork created by Wolverhampton school children will be on display in the same gallery that is home to the likes of Gainsborough and Warhol.

Pictures by pupils who have entered the 2Paint Wolverhampton competition will go on show at the city art gallery from this afternoon.

Children from primary schools across the city were invited to enter pictures in the competition depicting their favourite place in Wolverhampton. All the entries were created on school computers using an art software package.

The competition has been organised by Paul Porter, Curriculum Consultant in Learning Technologies for the city council. It is designed to give schools and teachers the chance to explore the use of an art software package within teaching and learning programmes while celebrating the city of Wolverhampton.

Councillor Christine Irvine, Wolverhampton City Council’s Cabinet Member for Schools, said: “This is a very exciting project which has produced some really high quality work. I would like to congratulate all the young people who have entered the competition on their efforts.”

With the support of 2Simple, a key educational software partner, the 2Paint a Picture software was made available to all primary schools through a professional development programme called Hands on Support.

The theme 2Paint Wolverhampton was chosen to celebrate Wolverhampton as a city and give students a chance to both think about their favourite part of Wolverhampton and display their artistic talents. The competition also aims to encourage young people to explore other forms of art.

Wolverhampton Art Gallery has offered to support the project by exhibiting all of the entries in the education area of the building.

The 21 finalists will have their entries framed and put up on the wall and all of the other entries will run on the plasma screen in the same area.

The exhibition will open at 2pm today, Monday, February 4, when a few children from each school with finalists have been invited to see their work on display - and will run until Thursday, February 21.

Councillor Irvine will present the finalists with awards and hand out certificates and prizes for first, second and third place during an awards ceremony at the gallery on February 21.

Issued by the press office.
