Pupils to be recognised for community initiatives
Released: 16 April 2008
Wolverhampton primary school pupils will be recognised for their work to improve their communities.
Children from Loxdale Primary School will be rewarded for helping to identify ways to enhance the east Bilston area. They have achieved this by taking part in a project using their geography and photography skills, as well as sharing their ideas and thoughts for a community consultation.
About 30 pupils will be handed certificates and trophies as part of a special awards assembly at the school on Friday April 18.
The children worked with the Safer Wolverhampton Partnership, Bilston East Local Neighbourhood Partnership and Bilston neighbourhood wardens to carry out the project which involved identifying places in the east Bilston area which they are proud of and areas they think need to be improved.
Photographs of the areas which the children took during the project and write-ups describing how they feel about them have been put on display at the school.
Some of the children have written to Members of Parliament, councillors and other agencies, to bring the areas which need enhancement to their attention.
Pupils also took part in the Bradley and Loxdale Community Consultation by talking to representatives from the local neighbourhood partnership, neighbourhood wardens and Wolverhampton City Council’s Youth and Play Services about the east Bilston area.
Elaine Loveridge, from the Safer Wolverhampton Partnership, said: “It was lovely to work with the children who were very enthusiastic. By presenting awards to the pupils at this special school assembly the agencies involved can give something back to them for all their hard work.”
During the assembly the Safer Wolverhampton Partnership will also present digital cameras to pupils.
Tricia Scott, Headteacher of Loxdale Primary School said: “Pupils from year six have really enjoyed getting involved in these initiatives and have gained a great deal from taking part.
“They have created a wonderful display and are looking forward to hearing from the people they have sent letters to.”
