What's on Where - Spring 2008

WOW! Just look What’s On Where this spring

Released: 1 April 2008

Wolverhampton’s thriving entertainment scene has certainly got something to put a spring in your step over the coming months.

The city’s latest What’s On Where guide – out on 1 April – is bursting at the seams with great music, theatre, films, exhibitions, activities and events taking place from April until June. And, as always, there is sure to be something for everyone.

KT Tunstall - 9 April, Civic Hall, 7.30pm

Highlights in the city’s fantastic Arena and Grand theatres include South Pacific, Sleuth, Show Boat, ART, The Crane and Blood Brothers, while some of the most colourful characters from our past are brought to life in Horrible Histories.  Meanwhile, Dancing Queen, Big Ballet, The Russian State Opera of Siberia and Simply Ballroom will keep dance fans satisfied.

Big names from the world of music are heading to the Civic Halls’ popular venues, including KT Tunstall, Portishead, Bjork, Midge Ure, Mark Ronson, Willie Nelson and Hal Ketchum.

Comedy comes from Mock The Week star Frankie Boyle and Never Mind The Buzzcocks presenter Simon Amstell.

Bjork - 25 April, 7pm, Civic Hall

Cinema from around the globe fills the big screen at the Light House, from all time classics like Reach For The Sky, Strangers on a Train, Blade Runner, Maltese Falcon and The Exorcist through to the latest hits such as The Orphanage, In Bruges and Lars and the Real Girl.  Meanwhile, the Light House’s ever-popular film and TV quizzes continue.

Exhibitions at the city’s galleries and museums include Sensing Sculpture, Pop Art and Politics in the 1960s and The Northern Ireland collection at Wolverhampton Art Gallery, while there are a host of workshops and activities for young and old – from clay tile making, fabric painting, rag rugs and ceramics to textile and garden groups and guided walks – at Bilston Craft Gallery and Bantock House and Park.

There are also events organised by the city’s library service such as Father’s Day activities and the Family Friendly Libraries celebrations. West Park will host the two-day steam and vintage rally return again this June as well as a number of sponsored walks for charity.

Simon Amstell - 1 June, 8pm, Grand Theatre

There is also a taster of what is ahead later this year, including a preview of Wolverhampton’s Indian Summer which will see the city council team up with various partners to celebrate Indian culture with a huge array of events.

And with details about events at other council-run venues, libraries, parks, sports arenas and the city’s two National Trust properties, there are plenty of reasons to get out and about this spring.

Emma Cleary, What’s on Where Wolverhampton coordinator, said: “We are really excited by the events we have lined up over the next three months.  There’s so much to do and we look forward to seeing new and regular faces again very soon.”

The free guide, which provides times, dates, locations and useful telephone numbers, is available from the Civic Centre, the Visitor Information Centre in Queen Square, local libraries and community centres and also from a variety of leisure outlets throughout the Black County, Birmingham and Shropshire.
