Fostering drop-in shop to re-open

Released: 24 September 2007

Wolverhampton’s Fostering Drop-in Information Shop will re-open to mark a week-long celebration of foster care in the city.

Staff from Fostering in Wolverhampton, the fostering section of the city council, are joining with current foster carers to run the shop for one week as a focal point for the recruitment drive.

The drop-in shop will be open in a prime location at the Wulfrun Centre, opposite The Entertainer, from Monday October 1 to Saturday October 6.

The fostering team and carers have got back into action after setting up the shop for the first time earlier this year. It proved a huge success when it opened at another Wulfrun Centre unit during National Foster Care Fortnight in May.

Once again, the shop will offer a central point where members of the public can gain information about fostering or have an informal chat about the rewards involved.

Councillor Paula Brookfield, Wolverhampton City Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “I’m delighted that we are opening this one-stop-shop again in a new high-profile location to celebrate the city’s Fostering Week.

“The week aims to highlight the need for people to step forward to become foster carers - and the shop provides a great opportunity for people who may have thought about becoming a foster carer to get further information and guidance.

“Opening the shop also allows us a chance to break down some of the misconceptions that people can have about fostering, such as the assumption that they must come from Wolverhampton.

“People can, in addition, learn more about the excellent financial reward package for foster carers and find out about the various types of fostering that are flexible enough to fit in with current lifestyles and commitments.”

The shop will be opened by Beacon radio’s weekend breakfast show presenter, Anna Sykes, on Monday October 1, at 10.30am.

Anna said: “I’m really pleased to be opening the drop-in shop. I know with all the hard work that the fostering team and foster carers have put in it will be a great success. The shop is in a brilliant spot and looks really good.”

The shop will be open from 10am to 3pm each day after the slightly later opening on the Monday.

For more information about fostering please call Fostering in Wolverhampton on 0800 0730 189 or visit the shop in the Wulfrun Centre.
