Minister praises schools' achievement

Released: 18 September 2007

Wolverhampton City Council has been congratulated by a Government Minister on the continued improvement in national test results achieved by primary school pupils in the authority area.

Lord Andrew Adonis, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Schools and Learners, has sent a letter to the council in recognition of the ongoing progress in results for tests of 11-year-olds (key stage 2).

He applauds Wolverhampton schools for this year’s results which show the highest ever achievement in Wolverhampton; 76 per cent in English and 72 per cent in maths at Level 4.

Lord Adonis also commends the authority for being among the most improved nationally over the last three years with an increase of five per cent for combined results in English and maths.

In the letter Lord Adonis said: “I wanted to take this opportunity to write and congratulate you on the excellent performance of the schools in your authority for achievement of their key stage 2 results this year….

“….Your combined results in English and mathematics achieved by the schools in your authority are amongst the most improved based over the period from 2004 - 2007.

“I would like to pass on my congratulations to pupils and teachers and to colleagues at the Local Authority for that achievement.

“Our primary schools have shown that their commitment to higher standards is greater than ever and we can be confident that, having consolidated the drive towards improved teaching and learning, they are continuing to improve.

“I send my very best wishes for sustained improvement in the year ahead.”

Councillor Christine Irvine, Wolverhampton City Council’s Cabinet Member for Schools, said this year’s results were a credit to schools, consolidating the progress made in recent years.

She said: “We are delighted to be among the top performing authorities to have received recognition from Lord Adonis.

“Schools and their teachers and headteachers are working incredibly hard and we are confident they are on the right track for further success.”
