Mayor hosts allotment prize presentation
Released: 14 September 2007
Wolverhampton Mayor, Councillor Trudy Bowen will next week on Tuesday 18 September host the Inter-town Allotment Crop Growing Competition prize presentation event.
Wolverhampton City Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, Councillor John Reynolds, will welcome guests to the event before the Mayor presents cups and certificates to the winning allotment entrants.
Run annually amongst allotment holders in Wolverhampton, Dudley, Walsall and Sandwell, the competitors have faced a challenging growing season this year with the difficult weather conditions of excess rain, low light levels and quite cold on occasions.
Despite these adversities the entrants have overcome these conditions to produce some fine crops and good allotment plots.
Each of the Black Country authorities supports local allotment associations in holding a ‘Town’ competition. It is the top three winners from these local competitions that are then entered into the ‘Inter-Town’ Competition.
This means twelve plots are entered in the Inter-town event and every entrant receives a certificate for reaching that stage of the competition.
An independent judge visits each allotment and awards points for the growing of a range of pre-determined crops and the general husbandry of the individual allotments.
The overall winner with the most points is presented with a Trophy, ‘The Jack White Cup’ and a certificate.
The ‘Town’ that achieves the most points collectively from its three allotment entries is presented with another Trophy, the ‘Florence Owen Cup’. This is considered to be a ‘team prize’ and certificates are presented to all four ‘teams’ from fourth to first place.
Each year the local authorities take it in turns to organise various aspects of the competition, this year Dudley booked the judge, Walsall have organised the prize money and Wolverhampton are hosting the presentation evening.
