Archive exhibition for Remembrance Day
Released: 29 October 2007
Archivists will commemorate the sacrifice made by a nation at war with a special exhibition to mark Remembrance Sunday.
Among the poignant items featured in the exhibition, which is being staged by our Archives and Local Studies service, will be the Wolverhampton Roll of Remembrance.
It lists the names of the men of Wolverhampton who died serving in the First World War. It was compiled by the War Memorial Committee in the 1920’s and includes regimental details.
Also on display will be an illuminated manuscript, photographs, news cuttings and personal stories which vividly bring to life the horrors of war.
Lesley Vasey, outreach officer, said: "This display honours the sacrifice made by all who have died in service.
“We are indebted to those who paid the ultimate price for our liberty which enabled this generation to live the lifestyle that we enjoy today.
“With our military currently on active service, Remembrance Sunday will have a particular resonance this year. The display offers an opportunity to reflect on the lives lost during conflict and provides a suitable location to remember them”, she added.
The items have been taken from the service's 50,000 item archive, which date from the 15th century to the present day.
The exhibition can be seen at Central Library, Snow Hill, from Monday 5 November to Friday 16 November. Anyone wanting further details of the exhibition can call 01902 552480.
