Improving travel choice in the West Midlands

Released: 22 October 2007

Business leaders in Wolverhampton are being invited to a free one-day conference to look at alternative ways of getting to and from work.

The event is being organised by the West Midlands TravelWise Group, supported by Wolverhampton City Council, and will take place at Austin Court, in Cambridge Street, Birmingham city centre on Tuesday, 6 November.

Registration for the event starts at 9.15am. Anyone wanting more information can log onto the Dudleys Travelwise website.

The conference aims to give employers the opportunity to explore the benefits of developing a travel plan including writing and implementing them.

Travel plans are designed to raise awareness of the travel options available to employees. They can include a package of measures that are tailored to a particular organisation’s needs and encourage people to use public transport, share cars, and cycle or walk to work.

Local authorities across the West Midlands, including Wolverhampton City Council, are working with businesses and can provide help and advice to those wanting to develop a travel strategy for their organisation.

The West Midlands has the largest UK population of people outside of London and has one of the highest levels of car owners. Experts predict there will be 165million extra car journeys by 2011, and businesses are being urged to set up travel plans to help tackle the impact on the region’s roads.

Issued by the press office.
