Members of the Chinese State Circus perform the Lion Dance

The circus is coming to town – Chinese style

Released: 9 October 2007

The circus that changed traditional entertainment forever will explode onto the stage at Wolverhampton Civic Hall in February.

Boasting the greatest family entertainment show this side of the Great Wall of China, the Chinese State Circus present a spectacular two-hour show featuring acrobatic stars, martial arts warriors from the Shaolin temple and members of Peking Opera.

They combine to perform a show narrated by one of the most famous characters in Chinese folklore, the Monkey King.

There are back-flipping acrobats spiralling through rotating hoops and a dizzying succession of gymnasts catapulting terracotta jars from head to head. Further spice comes from candelabra-balancing knotted contortionists, Chinese pole balancing and a lusciously set and costumed performance of the Lion Dance.

Add to that the deadly grace of martial arts from the Shaolin school of Kung Fu, Wu Shu and Qigong in which an ancient discipline is transformed into a dramatic entertainment rarely seen outside motion pictures or videos.

Mark Blackstock, manager of the Wolverhampton City Council’s Civic and Wulfrun halls, said: “Following a hugely successful three-night stint in the Wulfrun Hall last year, we are delighted to be welcoming back the Chinese State Circus. This is a truly spectacular evening's entertainment for adults and kids alike.”

Tickets for the show, which runs on Tuesday, February 5, and Wednesday, February 6, are on sale now, priced £10-£20, from Midland Box Office on 01902 552121 or online at the Wolves Civic website.

Issued by the press office.
