The Mayor Councillor Trudy Bowen and Cabinet member for the Environment Councillor Pat Pyrne at the opening of the new facilities

New toilets in Bilston town centre

Released: 9 October 2007

Wolverhampton Mayor, Councillor Trudy Bowen, together with Cabinet member for Environment, Councillor Pat Byrne, have officially marked the opening of new toilet facilities in Bilston town centre.

The £145,000 project at Bilston Market improves access to public toilet facilities for the local community and includes provision for the disabled and baby changing.

Cabinet Member for Environment, Councillor Pat Byrne, said; “Improving public toilet provision is a high priority for the council. This specific development complements our other regeneration initiatives in Bilston and is another example of the council’s commitment to enhancing services across the city”.

Open from Mondays to Saturdays from 8am to 5pm, the new toilets will be checked regularly throughout each day, both to maintain hygiene standards and as a security measure.

The new toilet facility is located at the rear of Bilston Market complex, adjacent to the main market car park and opposite Morrison’s supermarket and is accessed via the rear entrance to the market.

Bilston Market was chosen as a prime location for new toilet facilities as it is at the hub of the town centre, where it serves as a focus of consumer and visitor activities. The new toilets were developed following discussions with local ward members, the markets service and traders.

The scheme adds to the regeneration of the Bilston Market, which benefited from major improvements in 2003, and is the second phase of the city council’s public toilet improvement strategy. The first phase was completed with the opening of the WCityStop.info facility in Victoria Street in June 2006.

Issued by the press office.
