Over 50s learners encouraged to help shape strategy

Released: 3 October 2007

Wolverhampton residents are being given the chance to share their views on learning opportunities for older people.

The city council’s Adult Education Service is developing a learning strategy for older people - and is teaming up with the city’s Over 50s Forum to hold a consultation event for people who want to help shape it.

Rose Powell, Participation Officer for Older People, said: “Adult education has a key role in meeting the leisure and learning needs of older people.

“Learning enables them to develop their potential, maintain or improve their health and contribute in the wider society.

“Many older people argue that the benefits of learning are not fully acknowledged and that the inability to take up learning opportunities will ultimately result in an increase in costs for support services.”

Wolverhampton City Council developed a Strategy for Older People earlier this year which will play an integral part of the planning processes of organisations which have an impact on older people’s lives in the city.

It maps out to the action needed to sustain and promote their independence, health, well-being and quality of life. Now the Over 50s Forum and the Adult Education Service hope to integrate a learning strategy alongside it.

The consultation session for people aged 50 or over takes place on Monday, October 22, at the City Learning Quarter, Old Hall Street, Wolverhampton, from 10am to 3pm.

To reserve your place, contact Rose Powell on 01902 555494 or Dana Tooby on 01902 558430.
