Healthy living centre opens
Released: 30 November 2007
A centre which aims to bring people together to enjoy healthy activities has been officially opened at a Wolverhampton school.
The healthy living centre opened its doors in refurbished buildings at Parkfield Bilston High last week.
The new facility has been developed through collaboration between Wolverhampton Learning Partnership and the city council's Extended Schools programme to provide services for the whole community at a school setting.
The centre will be used by parents, the local community and pupils at the school and has been funded by the learning partnership as part of a city-wide approach to improving learning facilities for adults and families in community based locations.
Lord Dennis Turner of Bilston officially opened the centre on Thursday 22 November before Jon Crockett, Chief Executive of the Wolverhampton City Primary Care Trust, provided a brief overview on health in Bilston and the importance of such a facility.
Courses which cover topics including cooking, nutrition, exercise, basic food hygiene and much more, start at the centre in January.
Councillor Christine Irvine, Wolverhampton City Council Cabinet Member for Schools, said: “Healthy Living Centres provide a real opportunity for the community to access a range of services.
“We hope that by opening this centre at Parkfield Bilston High, as part of the Extended Schools programme, we can appeal to a wide range of people, to bring them together to enjoy healthy activities and friendship.”
Tanja Korfkamp, Extended School Manager, said: “This facility offers something for everyone and combines innovative ways to improve health and well-being within a community setting.
“We very much look forward to welcoming people to the centre.”
Wolverhampton's first ever Healthy Living Centre opened at Pool Street, Graiseley, in June this year to provide healthy activities for the whole community.
