Council staff help to raise awareness of bullying issues

Released: 26 November 2007

Wolverhampton City Council staff played their part in a national week of events and activities which aimed to raise awareness of bullying issues.

A stand was set up at the Civic Centre throughout Anti-Bullying Week, from 19 to 23 November, to provide information on bullying and where people can go for help and advice.

The stand was staffed on Blue Friday - the final day of the week - for people who wanted to talk to someone face-to-face.

Visitors to the stand were also invited to add a link to a big blue chain which pupils from Hill Avenue School in Lanesfield started off.

Pupils were each asked to take a link and write on it their thoughts about how bullying makes them feel and what can be done to put a stop to it.

Council staff were able to add their messages of support in a demonstration of their backing for the week’s activities.

By the end of Blue Friday sections of the chain had also been completed by shoppers in the Wulfrun and Mander centres, and in schools, libraries, youth, play and residential venues throughout the city.

Council staff were also invited to wear blue on Friday to show their support and Anti-Bullying Week events took place at schools and other venues up until Friday.

In Wolverhampton the week celebrated good practice and raised awareness of bullying issues. It also provided a springboard into the next 12 months of anti-bullying work in the city.

This year’s national initiative, run by the Anti-Bullying Alliance, was the fourth Anti-Bullying Week and the theme was bullying in school and the community.
