SCALA award win for Wolverhampton primary school

Released: 14 November 2007

St. Jude’s CE Primary School has won the prestigious SCALA (Society of Chief Architects of Local Authorities) National Civic Building of the Year Competition.

Wolverhampton’s first new primary school in 30 years, St. Jude’s in Paget Road opened at the beginning of November last year (2006).

The school was awarded the accolade of becoming National Civic Building of the Year at the annual SCALA Conference Dinner in Glasgow at the beginning of this month (Nov 2007).

Running for the past five years, the competition is the only one in the construction industry dedicated to rewarding excellence for design and construction in the public sector.

In its first year there were just 80 entries for the SCALA award and this year there were double that - 160 from across the whole of the UK - of which St. Jude’s was one of just two short listed national finalists. The school was nominated for the award by the city council.

Cabinet Member for Schools, Councillor Christine Irvine, said: “We are really thrilled that all the partners’ hard work in creating the new St. Jude’s Primary School has been recognized in this way.

“To have won this prestigious construction industry award demonstrates what a credit to the city this project is”, she added.

St. Jude’s Head teacher, Cheryl Gould, was jubilant at the announcement, saying: “We are very proud of our new building. The whole school community was involved in the project through extensive consultation and a partnering agreement with the main contractors ensured that we have a building which meets the needs of learners and teachers.

“To win this award is a tribute to all who were involved in the project and the visionary support of the Local Authority. Diocese and the Governing Body”, she added.

Issued by the press office.
