Agencies tackle abuse of adults
Released: 13 November 2007
Experts are raising awareness this week of the help available to combat abuse of vulnerable adults in Wolverhampton.
Members of Wolverhampton City Council’s adult protection unit are marking Safeguarding Adults Week by meeting shoppers in the Wulfrun Centre.
They are on hand to talk about the work they do in conjunction with the police, health staff and other bodies like Age Concern to protect vulnerable people aged 18 and over from violence and abuse.
People most at risk include those with physical disabilities, impaired sight or hearing, learning difficulties, mental health problems and elderly people suffering from physical frailty, dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease.
They can become victims of physical, psychological or sexual abuse, neglect and even criminal activities such as theft. Sadly, most who suffer mistreatment do so at the hands of someone they know and trust.
Adult protection manager Irene White said: “Most of the vulnerable adults we deal with have been abused by a family member. It is unusual for us to deal with abuse by a perfect stranger, but fortunately we are able to help in most cases."
For more information on the service, visit the display hosted by members of the Adult Protection Unit and its partners which is in the Wulfrun Centre until Friday 16 November.
If you are concerned about a vulnerable adult, contact the council’s adult protection unit on 01902 553218.
