English students prove they are pass masters
Released: 8 November 2007
Students from around the world who have completed an English language course are to be congratulated by the Wolverhampton Mayor for their achievements.
Adults who have come to Wolverhampton from across Europe, Africa and Asia and have joined the English for Adults learning programme will receive certificates from Mayor, Councillor Trudy Bowen, at an awards ceremony tomorrow Friday 9 November.
They sat a range of Cambridge skills for life examinations this summer which tested their English ability in speaking, listening, reading and writing.
Wolverhampton City Council’s Adult Education Service (AES) offers English language classes in many areas of Wolverhampton, including Penn Fields, Blakenhall, Whitmore Reans and at the AES’s city centre base.
Bruce Parsons, who oversees the English for Speakers of Other Languages programme run by the AES, said: “The students come from many countries including India, Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan, Hungary, Poland and Somalia.
“They study for between two hours and 10 hours a week and are taught by well qualified English language teachers.
“We are delighted with their achievements and hope they enjoy the ceremony.”
The AES also takes part in the Leonardo da Vinci programme, which has seen adults from Wolverhampton take up teaching placements in the city’s partner towns of Kobanya, Hungary, and Walbrzych, Poland.
Three teachers, Edward Stone, Matthew Preston and Jonathan Holt, are currently working in schools in Poland while a further seven teachers from the city are working in Hungary.
