City venues scoop top awards
Released: 27 March 2007
Wolverhampton venues are celebrating after being named as some of the best in Black Country tourism. Wolverhampton Civic Halls and Light House were given gongs at the Black Country Hotel and Tourism Awards.
The ceremony took place last Friday night, 23 March 2007 at The Copthorne Hotel where 300 industry figures gathered to hear the winners be announced. There were 13 categories and three finalists in each.
Wolverhampton Civic Hall beat off stiff competition from Black Country Living Museum, Dudley Zoological Gardens and Sandwell Valley Country Park to be crowned best large visitor attraction.
The Civic Halls’ website – www.wolvescivic.co.uk - came out on top to be named best tourism website of the year.
The Little Civic was the runner up in the best small visitor attraction of the year category.
Civic Halls Manager Mark Blackstock said he was delighted that the Civic Halls – which incorporates the Civic, Wulfrun and Little Civic – had triumphed. He added: "This is a fantastic accolade for all of our excellent staff - from the person who opens our doors at 6 in the morning right through to the person who locks them again at 4am."
Wolverhampton’s Light House won a silver award in the best festival/event category. It was recognised for hosting the Flip Festival dedicated to animation.
Both the Civic Halls and Light House are members of Wolverhampton Entertains – an umbrella group which aims to promote and provide accessible information on the very best in city entertainment.
Wolverhampton Entertains Project Officer Emma Cleary said “Many congratulations to the winning venues which form part of the Wolverhampton Entertains group. It is wonderful that the consistent effort from every staff member of the Civic and Wulfrun Halls, Little Civic and Light House has been rewarded and recognised in this way.”
