Patrols to target spring truancy
Released: 9 March 2007
Truancy patrols will be in operation throughout March across Wolverhampton.
Any child seen out of school during school hours may be stopped by the Police and details collected by Education Welfare Officers, including those children accompanied by an adult. In the city centre, patrol staff will contact the relevant school asking them to collect their pupil. In all other areas of Wolverhampton, pupils who are unauthorised absentees will be taken back to school by the patrol.
This applies both to pupils registered in Wolverhampton schools and elsewhere.
The overall purpose of the patrols is for the health and safety of pupils, to help to stop crime and prevent truancy.
The cooperation of parents is essential to the success of anti truancy exercises in the city, which supports parents in the fulfilment of their legal obligation to ensure their children are in receipt of appropriate education.
Follow up work will be done with any absentee, where appropriate, by specialist staff from the Education Welfare Service.
