Iconic image competition awards event

Students at the University of Wolverhampton’s School of Art and Design have been demonstrating their skills to civic leaders in a competition to produce an iconic image of the city for promotional purposes.

Wolverhampton Mayor, Councillor John Davis, today (Friday, March 9th) presented the first prize of £200 to Amit Bagga for an image on the theme of ‘Hands on Wolverhampton’ using vibrantly coloured handprints and featuring comments about the city from local people.

Second prize winner, Daniel Neale presented a montage image depicting heritage and growth, emphasising the city’s diversity and received £150.

Mitchell Parry, whose bold signpost image suggested Wolverhampton as a prime location compared to other destinations, gained third place and a £100 prize.

A recognition award of £50 for Technical Input/Ability went to Warren Bredenkamp for an innovative marketing idea promoting Wolverhampton as a fresh, bright, lively city by using a real apple.

Enterprise Champion, Councillor Phil Bateman, said; “We have been very impressed with the quality of work submitted for this unique competition.

“The students have understood our requirements to target the business community and called upon all their creativity and talent to capture the essence of the city in their work”, he added.

Dean of the School of Art and Design, Dr. Bryony Conway, said: “We are proud that our students have excelled in their efforts with this important competition.

“The University has well established links, not only with the city council, but also the wider city business community and other local partners and we will all benefit from strong imaginative marketing of Wolverhampton”, she added.

The initial idea for the competition came from the city council’s Business Champions’ meetings following discussions about the need for a key iconic image when marketing Wolverhampton nationally and internationally as a place to invest.

It is anticipated that one, or a number, of the winning images may be used or adapted for future marketing of the City of Wolverhampton.

Students were given four months to produce their iconic images based on a brief which wanted them to identify a positive, exciting image readily identifiable with Wolverhampton which would help encourage people to invest, visit, work, learn and shop in the city.

The judging panel comprised representatives of Wolverhampton City Council, the University of Wolverhampton and leading local businesses.

A digital media show reel of the submissions will be displayed at various locations across Wolverhampton later in the year. Venues will include the civic centre building, Central Library, Art Gallery, the Light House Media Centre, and also within the University of Wolverhampton, including the School of Art and Design.
