Wolverhampton Primary Schools Mini Hockey Tournament

Released: 5 March 2007

A mini hockey tournament for Wolverhampton primary school teams is being hosted at Aldersley Leisure Village by the city council’s Sport Development service and Wolverhampton Hockey Development Group.

Schools have received free hockey coaching sessions in the build-up to the competition, which will be held from March 14 to 21, with the finals taking place on Wednesday April 25. The tournament, for year six pupils, runs from 4pm to 6pm each day.

A total of 24 teams have entered and six teams will go onto the finals.

The tournament follows the success of the Wolverhampton Association for Sport in Primary Schools (WASPS) Unihoc competition held at Aldersley Leisure Village in January this year.

Councillor John Reynolds, Wolverhampton City Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture said: "I am really pleased that this competition is being staged in the city. It gives an opportunity for teams of young people to take part in a growing, popular sport.

“Unihoc is a simplified version of outdoor hockey, and if young people enjoy Unihoc and mini-hockey tournaments, then we hope they will move on and play the full size version."

Teams of year five pupils from 17 primary schools took part in the heats of the WASPS Unihoc tournament, with eight of these entering the competition for the first time this year.

The Holy Trinity, Oak Meadow, Holy Rosary and Lanesfield teams went onto the final evening which took place on Wednesday, January 31. The overall winners were Lanesfield and all players who entered the tournament received certificates.

Participants of this year’s tournaments are also being offered the chance to take part in a coaching day at Aldersley Leisure Village on June 3, organised by Wolverhampton Hockey Development Group.

Coaches representing hockey clubs in Wolverhampton will be attending and participants will have the opportunity to experience all aspects of club coaching, including specific goal keeper coaching sessions.
