New youth councillors and youth MPs elected

Released: 5 March 2007

The newly elected Members of Youth Parliament and Youth Councillors for Wolverhampton are busy preparing to take on their roles representing the city’s young people.

Elections took place last month (February) to find two city-wide Youth MPs, two deputies, and Youth Councillors for Wolverhampton’s three constituencies.

A total of 5,704 votes were cast by young people aged between 11 and 21 years old, and 29 candidates stood for election.

The results were declared at a special ceremony in the Council Chamber at Wolverhampton Civic Centre, last week, attended by the Mayor of Wolverhampton, Councillor John Davis.

The successful candidates, aged between 12 and 18, will help to ensure that young people’s views are heard and influence policies on a range of issues which affect them. They are currently working with youth workers to prepare for their new duties with the Youth Council and United Kingdom Youth Parliament.

Their roles include participation in Wolverhampton City Council’s scrutiny panels and meeting with the Leader of the Council and members of all elected parties of the authority. Youth MPs also influence national and international decisions.
