Released: 2 March 2007

Pupils in nine Wolverhampton secondary schools will have the chance to sample dishes prepared with Fairtrade goods next Friday (March 9th) as the culmination of a wide range of events staged in the city as part of national Fairtrade Fortnight promotions.

On the Fairtrade menu will be honey roasted chicken with savoury basmati rice, pasta napolitaine, homemade banana bread and orange juice for youngsters at Colton Hills, Deansfield High, Heath Park, Moreton, Our Lady and St.Chads, Pendeford, Smestow, Northicote and Wednesfield High Schools.

Wolverhampton Mayor, Councillor John Davis is tonight (Friday, March 2nd) hosting a Fairtrade reception in the Civic Suite for business leaders from long established firms as well as ethnic minority companies

Chair of Wolverhampton Fairtrade Partnership, Lord Turner, will be joining the Mayor at the event along with the city council’s Member Champion for Sustainability, Councillor Alan Smith and others involved with Fairtrade throughout the city.

"During the Fairtrade fortnight promotion we to try to bring on-board as many shopkeepers as possible – which we have so far been doing very successfully”, explained Lord Turner.

"We also try to enlist the support of smaller businesses and spread the message to as many people as part of an on-going crusade to raise the profile of the products", he added.

Issued by the press office.
