£15 million education and community project takes a major step forward
Released: 1 March 2007
Plans for an ambitious £15 million education and community facility in Wolverhampton have moved a crucial step forward with the appointment of a contractor.
Wolverhampton City Council has appointed Willmott Dixon Construction to build the Green Park/Stowlawn Schools and Community Project.
This will replace and radically improve the present accommodation for Green Park and Stowlawn Schools and Stowlawn Community Centre at Green Park Avenue in Bilston.
The scheme seeks to modernise the accommodation currently used by the existing special school, primary school and community centre. This currently consists of four separate detached buildings on three adjoining sites.
Councillor Geoff Foster, Cabinet Member for Schools, said: “This is great news in the development of this £15 million project and another example of our commitment to ensuring excellent education and community facilities are provided for our residents.
“This is a landmark scheme which will enhance the facilities for staff and pupils in the schools and for members of the community as a whole.
“It will transform three facilities in need of modernisation into one building fit-for-purpose with improved access, shared facilities and extended use. It will also provide better value-for-money and help to build partnerships at new levels with parents and voluntary agencies.”
The Department for Education and Skills announced in October 2005 that the local authority’s Targeted Capital bid for funding to replace Green Park and Stowlawn Schools and Stowlawn Community Centre with one purpose-built facility on the existing site had been successful.
Consultation has taken place at every stage of the process with all of the parties involved including parents and pupils.
